Text description provided by the architects. The site is an elongated plot along the north-south direction, parallel to Creueta street that runs depressed relative to the site, and sloping down to a green area at a lower level. The siting of the project offered the possibility of communication with the surrounding park and views of the sea and the nearby mountains. The program requested, in addition to the library, some classrooms for the adult school.
The building is split into two floors so that the volume is accessed from the street and from the park. An intermediate-level platform connects all access levels and allows one to go from the library to the park. A double height lobby communicates the access to the library on the top floor and the adult school on the lower level.
Despite the radical distance of formalization, the reference for the design of the library was Arne Jacobsen's project for Rødovre library. In that case, the building is surrounded by an opaque wall and the rooms open onto interior courtyards. In our case, due to program requirements, we needed to compact the plan, so that instead of turning space inwards, it was appropriate to involve the consultation rooms in the visual domain of the site.
The perimeter enclosure is designed with continuous glazing on the three facades overlooking the park. Towards the street, the enclosure consists of dark gray, precast concrete blocks, filling the panels between pillars evident from outside. A double facade is generated, with glass on the inner plane and perforated aluminum sheet panels at the end of the overhang that filter light and solar incidence.
A low parapet allows the passage of building services and supports furniture around the entire perimeter of the rooms. Access from the street and from the platform of the park are accented with a cantilevered pergola, clad in metal plate on the bottom. Intermediate platforms link the horizontal planes of the building with the topography, the library includes a wall to the north, a gardened area linked to the playground. Behind the wall, the wooded area finishes the park.
